Internet Scavenger Hunts or Webquests as some people call it are one of the many great resources that are available to which also integrates technology. These quests will provide motivation for students and help them to learn how to research on the web. The webquests are lessons that can accommodate every core subject, as well as extracurricular subjects. Webquests promote high-level thinking in students and develop problem-solving skills. The webquest which I developed was a Science Webquest with art and writing included in the quest plan. This webquest sends students on a scavenger hunt to find out what the three states of matter are and what are the similarities and differences in their characteristics. After completing and answering challenge questions, students will create a poster and write a reflection over what they learned in their webquest as an assessment.

States of Matter Scavenger Hunt

States of Matter Scavenger Hunt

1. Your Challenge
A. Introduction

Look at everything around you, matter is everywhere and in everything. You are even made of matter. Have you ever wondered what made up those things that are around us? Today you are going to use the computer today to discover some interesting facts about matter and understand the concept of matter. The food you eat, the liquid you drink, the air you breathe are all matter.Put on your seatbelt and sunglasses and enjoy the ride!

B. The Challenge·

Work independently to answer the questions on the states of matter.· On your own create a poster that explains the concept of matter.· After your poster is assessed, display it in the hallway to show it to your classmates.· After display you poster write a reflection on your webquest in your science journal.

CHALLENGE QUESTIONS
1. What is Matter?
2. What are the 3 States of Matter?
3. Give two examples of each of these states of matter.
4. In the websites they talk about a 4th state of matter, what is it?
5. What is the difference between the physical and chemical change?

Now it is time to do a little grooving. Click on
“Matter is Everywhere.” After you read the lyrics click on “Listen to J.P. perform this song” and enjoy.

3. Your Report: Sharing Your Results

A. The report must be your answer to the WebQuest challenge.

B. Which of these words best describes your report? (You may check more than one.)______written summary of what I (we) learned______story _____play ______poetry
X art______music _____chart ______graph multimedia______other: _________

C. In two or three sentences, describe your WebQuest report. In other words, tell what the reader or viewer will observe in your report. Please attach your report to this WebQuest form. Please include: Title page, body of report, and any graphs, charts or other forms of data collection with your report.

Physical Science – Grade 5
Standard 1: Properties of Matter and Energy – Describe characteristics of objects based on physical qualities such as size, shape, color, mass, temperature, and texture. Energy can produce changes in properties of objects such as changes in temperature. The student will engage in investigations that integrate the process standards and lead to the discovery of the following objectives:
Matter has physical properties that can be used for identification (e.g., color, texture, shape).
Physical properties of objects can be observed, described, and measured using tools such as simple microscopes, gram spring scales, metric rulers, metric balances, and Celsius thermometers.

Local science curriculum guide topic to which this WebQuest is most closely related:
Physical Science – States of Matter
Assessment tool to be used with WebQuest:
The WebQuest worksheet will be collected and given a quiz grade. At the end of the Webquest the student will create a poster titled “What’s the Matter?”. Your poster will graded using the rubric that was passed out to you this week.

Answers to States of Matter Scavenger Hunt

CHALLENGE QUESTIONS - ANSWER GUIDE

1. What is Matter?
Matter is all around you. Matter is made up of atoms and molecules and is anything that has mass.

2. What are the 3 States of Matter?
Solids
Liquids
Gases

3. Give two examples of each of these states of matter.
Solids – Rock, Fish
Liquids – Water, Blood
Gases – Air Bubbles, Steam

4. In the websites they talk about a 4th state of matter, what is it?
Plasma – They are a lot like gases, but the atoms are different. You don’t find plasmas walking around much. They aren’t things that happen regularly on Earth.

5. What is the difference between the physical and chemical change?
Physical change is when anything is added or taken away, but it is still the same thing, just a different phase. Whereas a chemical change happens on a molecular level, which would change the way the water acted, eventually making it something different.
